This February 15, 2024, Save Ellis Island welcomes Michelle Young, co-author of “Secret Brooklyn” to our program. Far from the crowds and the usual clichés, the book offers countless off-beat experiences and is home to any number of well-hidden treasures. These are revealed only to residents and some travelers who find their way off the beaten track. “Secret Brooklyn” is an indispensable guide for those who thought they knew Brooklyn well or would like to discover the other face of the city.
Then on February 28, 2024, Maria Smilios joins us for a discussion on her book “The Black Angels: The Untold Story of the Nurses Who Helped Cure Tuberculosis”. Spanning the Great Depression and moving through World War II, this remarkable true story follows the heroic young women at New York’s Sea View Hospital, known by their patients as the “Black Angels.” Despite their major role in desegregating the New York City hospital system and their vital work in helping to find the cure for tuberculosis, these nurses were completely erased from history. The Black Angels recovers the voices of these extraordinary women and puts them at the center of this riveting story, celebrating their legacy and spirit of survival.
Peter Morton Coan will be with us on April 17, 2024 for a talk on his book “Ellis Island Interviews: In Their Own Words”. The stories in his book are the firsthand accounts of the last surviving original immigrants who came to America through Ellis Island. The immigrants describe in detail the life they left behind - why they emigrated, what they endured and what became of them after their arrival in the New World. This book is a testament to their courage and conviction, a final opportunity to capture on record a crucial piece of America’s past before it is lost forever.
