She was, most recently, President of Save Ellis Island, Inc. in northern New Jersey until her retirement in 2011. Throughout her non-profit career, Judy was actively involved in a number of organizations, including The Peck School, Beneficial Corporation’s charitable trusts, and Waterloo Village, but she remained committed to Save Ellis Island, Pet Helpers, Charleston Historical and Preservation Societies, and, most recently, organizations dedicated to helping those in need in the Gullah/ Geechee community here in the Greater Charleston area. Judy loved to garden, fly fish, read, but most of all, to spend time with family, friends, her beloved dogs, and her much adored grandchildren.

Judy is survived by her husband of 51 years, Malcolm; son, Andrew “Angus” McAlpin (Ami) of Cortez, CO; daughters, Joann “Jody” Clarkson (Ed) of Bel Air, MD, and Marian "Mollie" Maughn (Ryan) of Portland, OR; eight grandchildren: Jackson Byerly, Elizabeth McAlpin, Benjamin Byerly, Ellen McAlpin, Holt Clarkson, Liza Clarkson, Beckett Maughn and Lucas Maughn; and siblings: Ellen Stevenson (Tom) of Chestertown, MD, James Rohrbacher (Darryl) of Hampstead, NC, and Anne Inge of Richmond, VA.

A small private memorial service will be held at a later date.
