Important things to know:

We thank you for taking a tour or program with Save Ellis Island. Tours and programs are a very important and major source of revenue that provides funding for the restoration and rehabilitation of the unrestored Hospital Complex.

Arrival time is important — Tours leave from the Immigration Museum on time and on schedule.  We suggest that you arrive 5 to 10 minutes prior to your scheduled tour time to sign in or you may miss the tour. Latecomers will not be able to take the tour unless there is availability on a later tour.

Tickets are not refundable, cancellations are not accepted, and refunds will not be given.

Purchasing Tickets —The purchase of a ferry ticket does not mean you have purchased a Hard Hat Tour ticket. There are several ticket options on the Statue Cruises website, please make sure you read each one carefully to make the correct selection. All visitors to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island receive an audio tour. Your ferry ticket also gives you access to the grounds of the Statue of Liberty; entrance to the Immigration Museum on Ellis Island.

Tours and Programs —
All Hard Hat Tours and South Side Programs are conducted by Save Ellis Island educators, docents and tour guides. Our tours and programs run seven days a week rain or shine. We do not cancel tours and programs.  However, there have been times when the National Park Service is forced to close the park due to extreme inclement weather.  In this case and in this case only, tickets may be rescheduled or refunded.

The Hard Hat tour is 90-minutes long and covers 1.5 miles of the unrestored hospital buildings and grounds.

There are no restrooms, seating areas, gift shops or restaurants on the south side. Dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. The south side, buildings and grounds, consist of historic unrestored buildings, we advise that you wear closed toe and closed heel shoes to avoid possible tripping injury. Please do not wear flip-flops or other loose shoes or sandals. We reserve the right to exclude you from the tour if our guides think your footwear is inappropriate for this tour.

You must wear a hard-hat at all times on the south side of the island — Save Ellis Island will provide one for you at the time of the tour. In many of the buildings, the doors and windows are missing and in some cases rooms have open walls. This allows for dust and other natural elements, leaves, tree branches, etc. to enter the buildings creating dust and other hazards. You are required to stay with your guide at all times or you may be asked to leave the tour. In this case, a staff member of Save Ellis Island or the Park Police will have to escort you back to the Immigration Museum. You may not video the south side (unrestored hospital and grounds) without prior approval.

Ellis Island is a federal property — please do not leave your mark on the historic buildings by writing on them, this includes finger drawings in the dust on the widows. Do not take anything as a souvenir and do not leave your garbage behind.
