On The Other Side with Save Ellis Island

Over the past year, Save Ellis Island has taken thousands of visitors to the south side of Ellis Island – the portion of the island closed to the general public. On these daily 90-minute guided tours, the public is immersed in the history and stories of the hospital and the 1.2 million immigrants who were treated there.

This experience will now be enhanced by a Virtual 3-D Tour where you will see spaces in the hospital not yet part of Save Ellis Island’s Hard Hat Tour. The new Virtual Tour, produced by the Historic American Buildings Survey, part of the National Park Service Heritage Documentation Program, is the ultimate way to expand upon the experience of your visit to the Ellis Island Hospital.

For those who have not yet taken the Hard Hat Tour, we know you will want to see these spaces in “reality.”

This “reality”, Save Ellis Island’s Hard Hat Tour, is enhanced by Unframed: Ellis Island an exhibit by internationally acclaimed French artist JR. It features more than 24 larger than life size pastings placed within the rooms, halls and wards of the hospital buildings. The artwork, taken from historic archival photographs, helps to bring the stories of the treated immigrants to life.

Tickets for the Hard Hat Tours are available for purchase through Statue Cruises.
