Stephen T. Mather Building Arts and Craftsmanship High School and Save Ellis Island team up to do just that.

It was all about teamwork on Ellis Island this summer when students from the Stephen T. Mather Building Arts & Craftsmanship High School joined forces with Save Ellis Island.

Both partners of the National Park Service, the Mather school and Save Ellis Island often work together on south side projects for the benefit of the unrestored Ellis Island Hospital. Working at the Ellis Island Hospital provides the opportunity for students to get that real world, hands on learning experience needed for success.

Partnering with the National Park Service—which is committed to protecting the nation's 400 national parks, monuments, cultural and historic sites including the Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island—students work directly in the trades of carpentry, masonry/plastering, decorative finishes and landscape management.

The school is named after Stephen Tyng Mather, the first director of the National Park Service, which was created in 1916 to care for America’s national parks.

Today, the National Park Service carries on the traditions established by Mather safeguarding nearly 400 places of historic, scenic and natural significance that tell the stories of America and its people.

Save Ellis Island is the National Park Service partner for the restoration and rehabilitation of the Ellis Island Hospital Complex.
